Full grown plants

As the plant grows, more features will develop and can be measured by a camera system. Its developing biomass can be related to the plant area and derived volume based on a number of camera images when the plant rotates. The number of leaves, the leaf angles, the leaf color, flowers or the development of fruit can all be desired features for phenotyping. We have developed a robust RGB system that also uses static fluorescence to obtain reliable plant/background separation and uses a programmable number of side views.

More advanced systems can also contain hyperspectral systems or 3D imaging.

What is digital phenotyping?

The phenotype of the (seed) plant is the observable property of that plant, under the influence of its environment. Depending on the relevant phenotypes (traits), a customized vision solution is made, often using proven techniques that are also used in grading plants, vegetables and fruit.

What can be measured on full grown plants with an RGB system?

Plant height, plant estimate volume from a series of side view areas, color, number of leaves, leaf angle, stem thickness and more.

What’s the phenotyping capacity?

The phenotyping capacity of the camera system is determined by the size of the plant, the number of properties to be evaluated and the desired accuracy.

Because Aris has a lot of experience in production systems in horticulture, we are used to achieving high throughput speeds. This means that we can speak of 'high throughput phenotyping'. Consider speeds of up to 20,000 plants per hour for small (seed) plants up to 300 plants per hour for fully grown corn plants.

Sustainable crops with phenotyping

Extreme drought, extreme heat, floods, crop diseases and pests, explosive population growth ... The changes in climate, environment, population and needs have an ever-increasing influence on our food production. To prevent food scarcity in the future, plant researchers, crop breeders and food producers are constantly working to develop better, more sustainable and climate-resistant crop types. In addition to obtaining higher yields, food wastage and food outages are reduced.

More and more intelligent vision software and more sustainable vision & robotics production systems will soon become an integral part of the plant researcher, grower and breeder. With our camera systems they select and cross plants with the best hereditary characteristics to grow new, stronger varieties and species.

Why Aris Vision System?

In addition to our state of the art vision systems, Aris works together with other parties in greenhouse technology to provide a total solution, including e.g. Experiment Management Software.
